When to Capitalize Subjects

Capitalize subjects when they are the names of specific courses.

Examples:

  • We decided to take Biology 101.
  • I struggled with World History last semester.

(These are proper names, so they are capitalized.)

Do not capitalize general subjects—except for languages.

Examples:

  • I’m taking chemistry and English this semester.
  • She loves studying math but finds history boring.

(Chemistry, math, and history are general fields of study, so they stay lowercase. But English is a language, so it’s always capitalized.)

Quick Tip:

If the subject name includes a course number or refers to a specific class title, capitalize it. Otherwise, keep it lowercase!
